Honoring and Supporting Our Heroes on Veterans Day and Beyond

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 1.2 million veterans live in poverty and are unable to afford essential home repairs or modifications. Since launching a national partnership in 2022, Lockheed Martin and Rebuilding Together have repaired more than 60 veteran homes, served 80+ household members and engaged more than 600 volunteers.
This year, Lockheed Martin and Rebuilding Together are partnered on 14 projects happening across the country in communities where Lockheed Martin employees live and work.

Nonprofit provides no-cost housing repairs to low-income residents

For some homeowners fixing a water heater, repairing a leaky roof or modifying an entryway to allow wheelchair access is as simple as calling a contractor or getting out the tools for a DIY project. For others, especially our most vulnerable, tackling home improvement can be daunting.
The last several years have been difficult for a lot of folks; many were pushed to the absolute edge by the pandemic and the high cost of living. Home repairs fell by the wayside as people, particularly older adults, adults with disabilities and low-income seniors, attended to even more pressing needs like food, medicine or paying the mortgage. That meant living in unsafe or unhealthy environments or, in some extreme cases, having to move out with no place else to go.

The Sharks Foundation kicked off its 30th year by providing Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley (@RTSiliconValley) a $30,000 Community Assist grant.
The grant went to revitalizing the home of a local Gilroy resident, Dorothy Cardenes. Cardenes has lived in Gilroy for 16 years and is a pillar of her local community. She worked as a CNA and patient registration representative for over 40 years at Good Samaritan and San Jose Regional hospitals.

Seven Trees partners with Lowes to revitalize undeveloped plot in east San Jose

The Seven Trees Neighborhood Association is partnering with Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley, the City of San Jose + Lowe’s to revitalize an undeveloped plot of land in east San Jose.
As of this morning, a team of ~70 volunteers have started work on planting three oak trees near Cedro Street + Cas Drive, and more improvements around the Seven Trees Community Center.

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley has done that work for more than three decades and hopes this Giving Tuesday will be a step that helps it continue its mission.
In just two days this year, 800 volunteers were able to refurbish over 40 homes fixing roofs, plumbing and providing wheelchair access.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Each brush stroke on a modest one-story home in Santa Clara helps cover the debilitating effects of time. And, it helps peel away the story of the decades-long journey of homeowner, Don Murphy.
“It’s just wonderful to see all these people. And they’re all so happy and enjoying themselves. That’s great,” he said.
At 93, Murphy is spending Veterans Day watching the work, and telling the volunteers the path that brought him to the South Bay.

HUD AWARDS OVER $38 MILLION TO PROTECT FAMILIES FROM HOME HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARDS

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded over $38 million to city, county, and Native American tribal governments, and non-profit organizations in 17 states to protect children and families from home health hazards. HUD is providing these 23 grants through its Healthy Homes Production Grant Program to identify and mitigate health and safety hazards in the homes of families of low-income.
These investments will protect families and children by eliminating significant home health and safety hazards in over 2,600 homes of low-income families. In addition, the investments will provide resources to build capacity for healthy homes interventions to support a workforce including housing renovation contractors, subsidies for licensing or certification fees to low-income persons seeking credentials as healthy housing practitioners, lead sampling technicians or certified renovators; and conducting targeted outreach, affirmative marketing, and education that helps promote participation in the program.

Families in SJ Neighborhood to Receive Free Cameras in Effort to Fight Crime

Dozens of families in San Jose’s Seven Trees neighborhood will be getting free Ring doorbell cameras and motion sensor lights in an effort to battle crime.
The group behind the effort is Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley and they chose that neighborhood, made up of the working class, low-income families, and aging residents, as a starting point.
“Last year someone crashed into our garage and it was a hit and run, and there were no cameras, nobody saw and this person left and we were left with a broken garage, broken wall, broken car,” said Marisol Barohona, of the Seven Trees Neighborhood Association.

SAN JOSE — John Migeulgorry was not expecting a fresh coat of paint and a new air conditioner and water heater when Lowes and Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley partnered to renovate the Vietnam War veteran’s San Jose home on Tuesday.
“It’s unbelievable — and they’re all so nice. They’re very, very thoughtful and kind,” Migeulgorry said of the dozens of volunteers who helped, adding that he initially joked with the project organizers that it would take that many folks to complete the work his house needed before they assured him that’s exactly how many people would show up.

Not all Vietnamese residents spent Saturday looking back at history. In East San Jose, some decided to roll up their sleeves to help others.
A group of 30 volunteers with the Vietnamese National Association of Real Estate Professionals (VNARP) partnered with nonprofit Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley to help fix up the home of a low-income Vietnamese family. VNARP has done similar projects in the past.
