You may have heard the phrase “Giving Tuesday” before, but are unsure what it actually is. Hearing about Giving Tuesday is especially common around the Thanksgiving holiday, often from many different sources—businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations. So, what exactly is Giving Tuesday and how does it work?

What Is Giving Tuesday and How Does It Work?

Giving Tuesday is a global movement that was founded in 2012 with the goal of promoting generosity and helping others. The movement continues to inspire others to do good every day, but specifically on Tuesdays—whether it’s making donations to charities, volunteering, helping someone in your neighborhood, or simply making someone smile.

However, there is one Giving Tuesday that is bigger than all of the others. The Tuesday after Thanksgiving—November 30th this year—is the most popular Giving Tuesday and is advertised as the world’s biggest day of generosity.

This is because Giving Tuesday was built out of the tradition of giving thanks for the things we are grateful for in our lives. This is done every year during the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, but this is also a period when we have Black Friday and Cyber Monday—two of the largest consumerism days of the year.

Giving Tuesday shifts the focus back to helping others and making an impact by supporting the organizations that are changing the world. Many nonprofits and charities rely on the donations they receive on Giving Tuesday to fund the important work they do year-round.

The Giving Tuesday movement works by providing organizations with tools and resources to build fundraising campaigns during this time of the year (and on Tuesdays throughout the year). This includes things like the #GivingTuesday hashtag, which help these organizations to reach wider audiences and potential new supporters that can help them fulfill their mission.

At Rebuilding Together – Silicon Valley, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy home, so we help provide critical home repairs to over 600 clients per year, including to those who are aging in place. We rely on generous donations—like those on Giving Tuesday—to continue our essential work and the positive impact we have in these communities.
